LittleBigPlanet’s Beta Levels Are Doomed

September26

So, are you happy with your Beta version of LittleBigPlanet? Have you created some levels yet? If you’re one of the 1000 people that did, I have bad news for you (and me).

I interviewed Leo Cubbin, one of LBP’s producers, today. I asked him what will happen to all the user created content when we replace the Beta version with the full game. The answer was what I feared: everything is lost!

I don’t know about you guys, but I treasure my levels and I don’t want to just lose them like that, so I tried to argue that they should allow us to move the content into the full game. Leo replied that maybe they’ll convert the best levels, but they can’t convert everything.

It looks like noone expected such a big response to the Beta version. So far, 10.000 people have logged in, and 1000 published their own levels. I guess a lot more are still working hard on those levels before they hit the publish button. And all that content will be lost soon…

What do you think about this? Should we email Media Molecule and ask for a way to convert our Beta levels into the full release? Or just forget about it?

The video from this interview is coming soon, stay tuned.

And yet on the SCEA blog they said all the levels will carry over to the finished product. I’ve heard people in the beta saying the same as well. I don’t see why they couldn’t be saved since I’d assume they stay on your hard drive.

Don’t worry about it. if you’ve put in 2 hours making a level your brain will remember everything you did. It should take far less time to make the level again from scratch, also giving you the opportunity to fix things that you found were problematic and add new things inspired by your old ideas. Think of it as a second draft of an essay. Its science, you can’t argue.

  3. On September 26th, 2008 at 3:57 pm Fernando Amaral Says:

Adam, 2 hours is not nearly enough to create a good level. Otherwise I would agree.

It’s a beta, dont value your work too much. It’s a test zone and a chance on losing generated content is always there. So i dont understand the fuzz. It’s a good practice now, so on its release you can make even better levels with the experience you’ve gained.

I would at least like to be able to save my objects. i dont need to save a whole level, but I would like to be able to save a monster or a vehicle or something that I put a lot of time into

Exactly drake, anyone who created something complex understands the problem.

I must have spent a combined 20-30 hours making a level with my fiance this weekend (LittleBigHalloween) if any of you have the beta. I hope it gets converted or I can save it somehow.

Aww come ON!! I thought they made a new “version”!? argh..

I’ve made 3 levels and 2 of them took 2 days worth of work EACH.. And im talking like.. From when I woke up to when I went to bed..

They need to just let us save it on the hard drive or something. When I uninstalled my game, I was able to go and find my published levels and copy them to My Moon.
